21. Location Shots

We actually wanted to film on a normal street but then we thought that cars would ruin shots and we would need to watch out all the time. Therefore we are using the long path next to my boarding house.
We are going to have our actor walk down this path.
We chose this location because we thought we want to present our actor in thoughts but he should still be in the reality. Therefore we thought that the path with the trees make it look a bit dreamy whereas the street next to the path and the zebra crossing pull it back into reality again.

18. 5 Sections

1) We are going to use a close up of the shoes of our main actor. That might seem quite boring but as our storyline is very simple we need to include shots, which make it more interesting for the audience to watch. That is also going to cause some mystery as the viewer does not know what our actor is up to.
2) The second very important section, which will be in our video is that we are going to set the camera towards the sun. That is going to create great lighting and varies a lot from the ordinary shots used in the music video.
3) The low angle makes the actor appear dominant and as most of the time we will use mid or long shots it gives the audience an opportunity to see our actor from a different view, which will make it interesting again.
4) Over the shoulder shot again creates a mysterious feeling as the viewer does not know what is actually happening and it also creates the mood of the actor turning away from the public, which symbolises that he is alone and needs to think about something important.
5) First we are going to film the weed on its own and the audience does not know what exactly is going on but then in the next shot our actor is going to walk past and therefore kind of "disturbs"the still image and make it therefore more interesting.

17. Story Arc

We chose a very simple story as we thought it is important that the audience is aware of the storyline.
Our music video is based on the typical story of a boy who lost his girlfriend to another guy. The audience however, is not going to find out why the split up but in his imagination the viewer is able to see how they were acting when they were still together and then how she is happy with another guy. In addition we are going to include parts of our actor singing parts of the lyrics.

OUR STOP MOTION

This is our stop motion video made by Paul and me. It is a simple storyline and quite short but I think it is pretty good. I tried to edit it on Adobe Primiere Elements 9, which is provided by our school but I just could not get the right effect. Therefore I used Aperture  on my Mac Book and I found the right effect. Although I wanted to use Cross-Prosessing, we used the Toy camera effect, which is quite simular. We used this effect as it is more effective than the Cross Prcessing one. It clearly illustrates youth and colourful, which goes with our image.

That would be the Cross-Prcessing effect in contrast. It is much darker and more serious, which would not really suit our images.

Cool Stop Motion

I bet this video took ages to make...if it would not be so difficult I would definitely do it for the stop motion task, which needs to be handed in by next week.
Therefore I decided to make a stop motion video including the cross processing effect because I personally think it looks pretty cool.
I also already have a weigh idea of what I want to do. If I am doing it here in school I want to girls coming from different directions and meeting together behind a tree. They are invisible for a few seconds and then suddenly you can see a foot or an arm stretching outside from each side. I think it is going to be a cool effect. Obviously they are going to do different stuff as well.
However, if I am in London I will take pictures of my friends jumping around in the hotel room. I would like them to jump on the beds but I am unsure of how I can take that many pictures and always catch them in the right moment. So we might have to be spontaneous with that. I am really excited though as I have never really tried to do stop motion.
Here are two pictures I took and edited with the cross-processing tool on Aperture on my Mac Book.

16.Elements we have to include

In order to make our video look as indie as possible we need to make sure that the mood of the actor comes across very clearly. As the song is very emotional and it should stimulate people to think about various things we need to match this with our video.
Close ups are very important as it allows the audience to find out how the person in the video is feeling exactly. Therefore it is easier for them to identify the message of the song.

We also need to include the right sort of editing effects. When we have filmed our music video we have to look for the right kind of effect, which we are going to edit over the natural material we have filmed. That will make the audience understand the video much better as the right editing helps to underline the mood of the story.

That picture was edited in dark colors and therefore it seems frightening to the viewer.
In addition in most of those indie songs videos the storyline is hard to identify.
Therefore our video is going to be easy made but we do not give the audience too much information away.
Also very important for us to include is the clothes our actor is wearing as it says a lot about a person. Especially to attract our target audience who are into fashion it is significant that Paul and I are going to choose the correct outfit.

14./15. Specific Shots, and actions in our video

Our music video is going to look like a long take with a guy walking down the road. However, we will include cuts, which we are going to "invisible" to the audience. The actor in the video is supposed to be a men who cheated on many girls and still believes he is popular. However, he does not realize that no girl is into him anymore. All the females are standing at the side of the road and wait until he passes them. He is suffering on his way and it should actually reflect on his whole life and the consequences it would bring when he cheats on girls. Whenever he walks normally without any interruption he is singing into the camera. The camera is always set on mid shot as we are tracking him. The only exceptions are when we are wanting to cut the shot and we put something in front of the camera and change position. That could be some one passing in front of the camera. Through that effect the audience is not aware that we actually made a cut into the scene.

More Inspiring Music Videos...

13. Institution research

I thought that Partizan Entertainment would be the best music video production company for our music video.Partizan is an award-winning production company with a worldwide reputation for creative excellence.
Since its launch in 1991 Partizan has become one of the world’s leading producers of content – from music videos and commercials to documentaries, feature films, animation and online and branded content.
As they are already a well established company they have a reputation and therefore it is easier for us to get the public aware of our music video.
They produced for the indie band She&Him.
Also they produced for the White Stripes, which is a band I admire.

For the exhibition of our video I would choose either VIVA or MTV.

Those are the most internationally known music channels and therefore they play from hip hop or pop down to indie and alternative rock. Therefore I thought that the public would watch those two channels the most and we could therefore gain popularity. Also the chance of our target group is much higher as if we would exhibit it on not so well known music channels.

I believe that Youtube would be the best way to distribute our video as lots of people are on it and look at videos all the time. That is probably because it is for free and easy accessable as people nowadays have an own button for Youtube on their mobile phone or iPod touch. Through distributing our production on Youtube we would also be able to receive honest critism and which would help us to improve our videos the next time.

Random Finding...

When I was looking through Youtube I found this video and I thought it was a pretty clever and simple idea. I really liked that music video as it is different to what someone is expecting a video supposed to be. Although I do not really like the song and the style of video would not suit to our production, I am fascinated by that video. It really proves the simplest production can have an effect.

12. Secondary Research on 4Music

I went on the Channel 4 webpage and looked at the business section. There I found out what sort of audience Music 4 is looking for. They are concentrating on the mainstream music as that means more audience. Our genre is Alternative Rock/Indie, which is not listened to by every one. However, our song is very calm and puts the audience into a kind of relaxed mood, therefore I could imagine it playing it on Music 4 even if it would probably not be one of the most played songs.4Music is targeting the high middle class and young people of the upper class, which are not specifically people who would listen to our genre but that is very general and I am absolutely certain that some people would enjoy listening to our tune especially as it is very calm. In addition the song Funeral was such a success for the band and therefore they already established a reputation, which helps to make people listen to the new song as well.As it is a calm and thought provoking tune I believe that it is going to be especially attractive to females, which are also the target of 4Music.Furthermore they started a massive cross promotion, which makes more people listen to 4Music. It makes people getting aware of what they offer and they will listen into it at least once and therefore boost the number of audience. That it important to us as not every audience member will approve with our title but if there is a number of people listening the number of people interested in our song will increase. In addition, 4Music target is between 16 and 24 female. The age is perfect for our song as it is the kind of title those age groups would listen to. However, in my opinion I also strongly believe that men would be attracted by our song and we would therefore have to find another music channel, which is suitable for male and female of all classes because although I think that 4Music would be suitable, I still believe that another radio channel not as specified as 4Music.

11. Perfect audience member

With the help of uktribes.com I found out that Trendies would be our perfect audience member.
During my research I found out that they like listening to M.I.A, The Pixies and MGMT, which are bands I can relate to our band and song. Although those bands might produce songs, which involve much more the genre of rock, they are still quite indie.

In addition Trendies like to shop at Topshop and American Apparel. American Apparel for instance is a brand, which sells “simple looking” clothes but actually they are very unique and different.

Trendies are dressed and listen to different music than the mainstream. However, that can not be applied to all of them as there is always 1 or 2 songs in the charts everyone admires. Also it does not mean that all Trendies love American Apparel and never shop at H&M. I only said that because I wanted to create a stereotypical picture of them.

Also although they do not look posh they are quite interested in reading the Vogue magazine as most of them are interested in fashion.

10. Audience Research

For my audience research I asked people in my boarding house and friends different age groups about music genres and what effects music videos have on them.
My questions were:
1) What genre of music do you listen to?
2) When you watch a music video does it make a difference to the song you are listening to?
3) What sorts of music videos do you like?
4) What puts you off?

Eliza,14
1) Her favourite genre is pop and basically anything what is on on Radio 1.
2) To her watching a music video does not make any differnece to the song and does not have any effects on her.
3) However, she likes music videos as they are interesting and she is especially interested in the dance performances.
4) What puts her off are inappropriate images and when the video does not match her expectations.

Antonia,16 and Julia, 18
1) Antonia especially likes House music and music which is suitable to dance to. Julia on the other hand prefers R&B.
2) Both of them like dicovering details in music videos, which give the song a complete new face.
3) Antonia really likes it when the music video contains dancers rather than a storyline.
Julia however, prefers a good storyline.
4) Antonia is like Eliza and does not like inappropriate images coming up such as in some of the Eminem videos she explained. Through those images it might be possible that she changes her mind on the song and suddenly dislikes it. Julia needs an interesting storyline as the video has a huge impact whether she likes the song or not.

Nadine, 17
1) Nadine likes Hip Hop.
2) To her the music video does not make any differnece to the actual song but she enjoys watching them anyways.
3) She is especially interested in the luxery life and the good looking dancers, who appear in the videos.
4) She is however  put off by the fact that she gets jealous by watching the dancers and their figure and also the luxury life they can afford although she knows that this "dreamworld" does not actually exist.

Zoe,17
1) Zoe is into the Indie genre.
2) The video does not really make a difference to her, however when the video is really good she likes the song even better.
3) Zoe prefers a good storyline rather than a dance video.
4) She does not like it when the actors in the video are not attractive. That is not surprising as in almost every music video attractive people are chose to act because that makes more people watch the video.

Philipp,17
1) Philipp is like Zoe into the Indie genre.
2) For him the music video is very important as it brings the feelings of the song better across and he is able to understand the storyline.
3) Philipp prefers like Zoe a storyline rather than a dance music video.
4) He is put off by a storyline he does not understand.

Paul,18
1) Paul is into the alternative genre.
2) For him the music video does not make a huge difference and the video has a small influence on him.
3) He prefers a simple storyline rather than a confusing one and the actors need to be good looking.
4) When the actors are not good looking and the message is delivered the wrong way through the music video.

To sum up we most of the people we have asked about their opinion about music videos. We interviewed people with different tastes of genre as we thought that we want to get an overall picture of what the audience likes and what puts them off. However, we found out some very interesting stuff, which we are definitely going to include. We are definitely going to create a video with a storyline as we do not have professional dancers here in school. Therefore our music video is going to have a simple storyline as through the research it came out very clearly that people are put off by over the top performances, especially those interested in indie or alternative. We also do not want to enter the typical "dream world", which is often included in music video but we want to stay down to earth. However, we are going to include an actor who is good looking as we think it is important as it sells the song so much better.
